Drive-in racking features a "block stacking" approach—pallets are stored in depth within a single aisle, placed one behind another. This design makes it ideal for low-turnover inventory with homogeneous SKUs and full-pallet movements. Its Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) access method means the first pallet loaded sits deepest in the aisle and is retrieved last.
To load or unload, forklift operators drive directly into the aisle until reaching its end. This system shines in space efficiency, especially in compact warehouses. By eliminating multiple aisles, drive-in racking converts more floor space into storage, dramatically increasing pallet capacity per square foot.
Unlike drive-in systems, drive-through racking offers dual access points, allowing pallets to be loaded from one side and unloaded from the other. This facilitates First-In, First-Out (FIFO) inventory management but requires additional aisle space.
The system relies on internal rails. Forklift operators place pallets on rails at the aisle’s rear, with subsequent pallets stacked in front. Single-sided access allows installation against walls for space savings. Bidirectional access (at reduced density) can be achieved by adding horizontal beams at midpoints.
Design hinges on pallet dimensions and quality. Rails typically support pallet edges (3 inches), making sturdy pallets essential. For standard 40-inch GMA pallets, rails are spaced 42 inches apart with 1-inch clearance per side. Systems often reach 16-20 feet tall but can be customized.
